US Air Force Member Dies After Setting Himself on Fire Outside Israeli Embassy
In a shocking and tragic incident, Aaron Bushnell, a 25-year-old active-duty member of the US Air Force, has died after setting himself on fire outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington, DC. The harrowing act, captured on video, was a protest against what he termed as complicity in genocide against Palestinians.
Bushnell, in a video obtained by CNN, expressed his refusal to be complicit in what he saw as genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Pouring an unknown liquid over himself, he ignited it while repeatedly shouting “Free Palestine.” Despite efforts by police officers to extinguish the flames, Bushnell succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a local hospital.
Confirmed by both the Metropolitan Police Department and the Air Force, Bushnell was a cyber defense operations specialist assigned to the 70th Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) Wing. Col. Celina Noyes, commander of the 70th ISR Wing, extended condolences to Bushnell’s family and urged respect for their privacy.
The incident, which occurred around 1 p.m. in northwest Washington, is under investigation by local authorities, the US Secret Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Notably, no embassy staff were injured, according to a spokesperson from the Israeli Embassy.
