In a recent dialogue session at the World Economic Forum, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, emphasized the urgent need for a resolution to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The Palestinian issue, he highlighted, holds pivotal significance not only for the Middle East but for the entire world.
Mediation, a cornerstone of Qatar’s foreign policy and enshrined in its Constitution, has been a consistent approach for the nation. However, the international community’s response to the Gaza conflict has been deemed disappointing by Prime Minister Al Thani. He expressed concern over the controversial nature surrounding calls for a ceasefire, marking an unprecedented development in modern history.
Addressing the media’s limited coverage of events in the West Bank, Prime Minister Al Thani urged a closer examination of the situation, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to the entire Palestinian issue.
The State of Qatar has issued warnings regarding the potential expansion of the conflict’s impact beyond the Gaza Strip, stressing its potential spillover effect on the broader region. The escalating tensions in the Red Sea were identified as particularly perilous, impacting both regional stability and global trade.
Advocating for diplomatic resolutions over military interventions, Qatar maintains that the primary focus should be on resolving the core conflict in the Gaza Strip. Prime Minister Al Thani emphasized that by addressing and resolving this central issue, a domino effect could lead to the resolution of other conflicts.
Speaking at Davos on January 16, 2024, Prime Minister Al Thani reiterated Qatar’s commitment to finding immediate solutions, calling for an end to the war, the release of hostages, and the freedom of Palestinian prisoners. The international community’s support is paramount in achieving lasting peace in the region.
