Qatar opened the 2024 Global Security Forum on Monday, convening international leaders and experts to address pressing global security challenges as the crisis in the Gaza Strip deepens.

The three-day forum, held under the theme “Strategic Competition: The Complexity of Interdependence,” aims to foster dialogue and develop strategies for navigating an increasingly interconnected yet turbulent world.

In his opening remarks, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani underscored the urgency of the Gaza situation, where an Israeli military offensive has killed tens of thousands since October.

“The scale of the humanitarian tragedy there is worsening every day, which requires intensifying international efforts, whether those concerned with ending the conflict or humanitarian efforts to ensure the arrival of aid,” Al Thani stated.

The Prime Minister’s speech was preceded by condolences for the Iranian government following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and their delegation in a helicopter crash on Sunday.

Addressing the conflicts in Gaza and elsewhere, Al Thani urged a moral approach to conflict resolution, stating Qatar’s commitment “stems from our collective responsibility towards the advancement of the most vulnerable peoples.”

The forum features ministerial discussions, panel talks by security experts, and closed-door meetings on issues ranging from the Gaza crisis and evolving threats to emerging technologies and human security challenges in the Global South.  

In a one-on-one session, Qatari Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al Khulaifi reiterated Qatar’s determination to mediate an end to the Gaza conflict despite obstacles posed by Israel’s Rafah invasion.

“In spite of those challenges, we remain committed…and engage with our parties as much as we can,” Al Khulaifi said, highlighting Qatar’s successful mediation to resolve the 2017-2021 Gulf diplomatic crisis.

Organizers from the Qatar International Academy for Security Studies and The Soufan Center expect the forum’s insights to shape future strategies outlined in a comprehensive report on advancing global security and stability.

The high-level meeting has drawn a prestigious roster of attendees, including Rwandan President Paul Kagame, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani, and ministers from Singapore, Maldives, and Togo, among others.

As the Gaza crisis escalates, all eyes are on the discussions in Doha aimed at forging collective approaches to address the world’s most pressing security dilemmas through principled dialogue and cooperation.
